THE SYSTEM IN PRACTICE
An optical link transmits data using light, offering a different approach to operating distance and cable size from a conventional electrical connection.
We developed BlueROV integration using multi-fibre single-mode cables and optical connectors made in our workshop. A dedicated reel helps manage the cable during preparation and operation.
Optical connection developed for the ROV platform.
Length selected for the operating scenario.
Dedicated reel for deployment and retrieval.
CONFIGURATIONS, EQUIPMENT AND DATA
We developed and tested the integration of multi-fibre single-mode cables on BlueROV. Optical transmission supports links over kilometre-scale distances with a favourable volume-to-weight ratio compared with the electrical alternatives considered. Overall link capacity also depends on converters and interfaces.
| Fibre | Single-mode, multi-fibre |
|---|---|
| Breaking load in the dedicated specification | Approximately 250 kg |
| Another cable version | 4 mm; 300 kg; −40 to +80 °C: identify the cable supplied |
| SORS optical connectors | Made in our workshop; 500 m operating depth |
| Reel | Dedicated reel, available for different lengths |
The reel helps organise and rapidly deploy the cable. Length, bend radius, mechanical load and terminations must be designed together: fibre does not provide unlimited network bandwidth or distance.
